The Seppelt Drives Cafe at Seppelt Cellar Door is open 7 days a week, from 10 am – 3 pm. Located inside the Seppelt Cellar Door, the menu fits perfectly without award-winning wines.

If you fancy a nibble while visiting Seppelt’s Cellar Door, the menu at The Drives Cafe now offers either an assortment of mouthwatering grazing platters or a variety of delicious, gourmet-filled, toasted focaccias and Chef Nonna Fran’s housemade pizzas. Perfect to enjoy with
a glass of your favourite Seppelt tipple whilst relaxing on the lawns of our magnificent picturesque grounds.

With much demand, Seppelt Wines are thrilled to be once again offering ticketed underground dining experiences.   Join our host for the ultimate Grampians dining experience, beneath the surface of Seppelt Wines in Great Western.

In 1865, Joseph Best, one of the forefathers of winemaking in Australia commissioned local gold miners to begin tunneling cellars, known as “Drives”. It took over 60 years to complete the 3 and a half kilometres of cellars.

The dining experience commences at 6 pm sharp in the Seppelt Wines Shaft House. Your host will greet you with a glass of Salinger 2017 Sparkling wine.   You will then descend beneath the winery into the Seppelt Wines heritage-listed underground cellars “The Drives” for a personally guided tour before arriving at the famous “Brandy Nook”. Our Chefs will be preparing an exceptional 3-course meal, paired brilliantly with Seppelt Foundation Wines. It will be an underground dining experience to remember.

• A general yoga practice (breathwork, movement and relaxation) which will be suitable for all levels.  This will take place in the Barrel Hall (directions below) or on the lawn if the weather is kind! You will need to be able to get up and down from your mat.  Please BYO mat (let me know if you don’t have one) and wear/bring appropriate layers for savasana – the best bit where we lay down at the end!  NB:  The hall floor is concrete and don’t forget sunscreen if we’ll be outside.

The underground cellars of Seppelt Wines in Great Western have a long and interesting history. In 1910, one of the underground cellars was named after one of the most famous Opera singers of the late Victorian era, Dame Nellie Melba. She visited Seppelt Wines in Great Western to officially open the drive and as a publicity stunt, she bathed underground in a bath full of Great Western Champagne.

Bruce Ahchow, the Custodian of  Seppelt Great Western will take you on a private tour of the underground “Drives”. He will share the folklore behind Dame Nellie Melba’s visit to the Great Western Estate and other stories of days gone by. You will be guided through a tasting of the current collection of Seppelt Sparkling Wines, 7 metres below the surface of the winery.

The experience will end at the cellar door with a tasting of the Original Seppelt Sparkling Shiraz and a serving of “Peach Melba”, a dessert of peaches, raspberry sauce and vanilla ice cream. Peach Melba was invented in 1892 by French Chef Auguste Escoffier at the Savoy Hotel in London, in honour of the Australian soprano, Nellie Melba.

Chef Shaun has just released a new Toastie menu with the all-time favourite, Reuben. The Reuben has housemade sauerkraut, corned beef, cheese and Russian dressing will always be on the menu. Chef Shaun has added some delicious new toasties. The Croque Madame, with vintage cheddar, ham and egg dipped bread. Join us on Saturday 4th September 2021 for a unique wine tasting experience, 7 metres below the surface in the heritage listed Seppelt underground cellars, where you will be able to taste the new Seppelt Luxury wine release, including the 2019 Arrawatta Shiraz, celebrating Seppelt Wines 170 years of wine Australian Winemaking.

The 90-minute experience starts from the Seppelt Cellar door where you will be greeted by your host and taken down underground for a guided tour before arriving at the Dame Nellie Melba underground tasting cellar.

Seppelt Wines releases new vintages into their Luxury Collection every July and the 2021 release includes the limited edition of “Arrawatta Hill” single vineyard, Great Western Shiraz to commemorate the 170th Anniversary of Seppelt Wine’s winemaking heritage this year.

The annual Seppelt Luxury Collection encompasses our most coveted still and sparkling wines, including highly awarded Drumborg Riesling. The collection showcases the terroirs of the Heathcote, Henty and Grampians regions.

As part of the Grampians Winemakers Wine Pop-up and Barrique Auction, hosted on the traditional Grampians Grape Escape weekend, join Seppelt wines in the most decant experience combining winemaking and the amazing Seppelt history with their Sparkling Wine Masterclass.

Seppelt Wines in Great Western has consistently produced sparkling wines since 1890. Having won awards for decades from the days of Great Western Champagne to current wines, the Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz and the Seppelt Salinger sparkling curvee’s.

Join in our Masterclass, starting in the Seppelt underground rumuage room and then work our ways through the underground cellars, where you will be taught about the blends, riddling, disgorging, what method tradionadelle is and just what it takes to produce sparkling wines in Australia.  You will learn the history of Champenoise style wines and the amazing history that the cellars of Seppelt Wines have witnessed.  You will also be educated on how you should treat fine sparkling wines in your cellar collection.

Tastings will include Seppelt Fleur de Lys, still, decades since the first release, our most popular sparkling wine.  The pinnacle of Seppelt sparkling whites, with the Salinger NV and  Salinger 2015 Vintage.
We will also be comparing the Seppelt Original Sparkling Shiraz with the show-stopping 2008 Seppelt Show Sparkling Shiraz.

It is fantastic to see a hive of activity once again in Regional Victoria for the 2021 Easter Break.  The Grampians region has always been a destination for this long weekend, with many families making the annual pilgrimage to our region to soak up all that is on offer.

Great Western, the wine and food village of the Grampians is always a great place to visit, but over Easter, there is, even more, to explore, indulge and enjoy.

Great Western is well known for being a historic wine mecca, with some of the oldest established vines in Australia and home to the amazing Seppelt Underground Cellars.

Grampians Estate has long been known for its cool climate peppery shiraz.  During the COVID lockdown, there have been some amazing developments at Grampians Estate with the opening of their new dining and kitchen area.

Adam Richardson, from ATR Wines fame will have his cellar door open this Easter, just a few kilometres out of Great Western. (Follow the signs from Seppelt Cellar Door)

The crew at the cellar door will have tastings available from Thursday 1st April 2021 until Monday 5th April 2021 - 1pm - 5pm each day.   The ATR Cellar door is spectacular and well worth the visit, not only for its location, but the wines will be proudly pulled out at any dinner party.

The Chefs at the cafe have access to some of the most amazing Grampians produce and the Salingers Kitchen garden is bursting with seasonal produce.

Wander through the arch at Salingers and you will discover the bee hive in the wall. You can safely watch these busy bees make honey.  Absolutely fascinating to watch.

Grab your essentials, bread, milk, newspapers and also have Take-away Food available.  They are also stockist of Great Western Granary’s Artisan Sourdough. If you are quick enough, you may also be able to get your hands on some of their Hot Cross Buns or a loaf of sourdough to enjoy over the long weekend. The local Great Western community is currently developing the “Great Western Wine and Heritage Cycle Trail” The route connects the three major wineries in Great Western, Seppelt, Best’s Wines and Grampians Estate, with the start being at Memorial Park in the centre of the town.  Great Western is amazing, taking your time to absorb the wine, the history and the environment on your bike is an amazing journey.

A little bit of “Bee-Keeping” happened in the Salinger hives today, getting those busy bees sorted for another season.

The Salinger Hives are very popular with our visitors, who can watch the busy bees safely behind Perspex as they look after their Queen and make honey.
These bees are very lucky to have one of Australia's most renown Apiarist, Peter Kaczynski from Ararat looking after them.

In today’s visit, he extracted a little honey, cleaned the hive and step the bees up for the next season.

Did you know that Bees are hardwired to do certain jobs? Scout bees search for new sources of food is wired for this adventure. Soldier bees work as security guards their entire life and then about one-per cent of middle-aged bees become undertakers, a genetic brain pattern compels them to remove dead bees from the hive. They really are the most fascinating insect. Did you also know that they collect pollen close to their hive, but also far enough away that predators can’t find the hive?
