There were some big toys at the Great Western Hotel on Tuesday, just to replace the “Carlton Draught” sign on the roof that was recently damaged in bad weather.“There weren’t too many options. Being on the main Adelaide - Melbourne highway, we just can’t stop the traffic and on the side street there is quite the collection of power line. Safest way was over the top!” reported Great Western Hotel Manager David Clough. The crane from West Crane and access in Stawell made easy work of the job. The crane had to assist getting the sign 34 metres across the top of the hotel. “It’s so much brighter than the old one, you won’t miss it after dark” said Mr. Clough. The Great Western Hotel has a very long history in the region and has been known has both the Exchange Great Western and the Shakespeare Hotel before it was renamed in 1951 to the Great Western Hotel.
